Two segments of the internet population cheered when Google came out with Google Plus One, those that provide great content day in and day out, and those that make a (great) living selling to new markets. And the latest, greatest new market is the Google Plus One for sale market. That’s right, you can buy Google Plus one’s until your ATM tells you you can’t.

So you’ve got the big websites that put out new, unique content on a regular basis. They are happy because there thousands (millions) of daily readers, like what they read and click on the Google Plus One button. These, Google Plus One’s are, in a way, a popularity contest not unlike the Facebook like, or the Digg, etc. But Google Plus Ones are different in one big way, at least according to Google: More Google Plus Ones = higher rankings and/or traffic from the Google search engine. So it’s not wonder that web entities who put out great content are happy, as they are rewarded with increasingly higher rankings and traffic in the Google Search engine wars. Win/Win.

But what about the majority of sites out there that put out copied, rewritten, reworded, regurgitated, bad grammar, well you get the idea….CRAP content? What about them and their search engine rankings? They go to all that trouble to set up a WordPress blog, copy some material from another site, or better yet, set up an auto blog CRAP posting machine, and now suddenly Google changes the landscape on them!?

Not to worry CRAP spinners, those new market makers have swarmed to your rescue, out of the goodness of their hearts (or maybe for the money). They’ve set up shop and created thousands of Buy Google Plus One e-stores, websites, or just sell them on Fiverr.com. People are selling “real” google plus one votes for anywhere from 20 to 100 or more Plus One’s for 5 bucks. So, as expected, now the lazy crap spinners can just open their wallets and “try” to improve their rankings on Google. I say “try” because it’s not yet known whether these Plus One votes really do help your rankings or not. The only thing I’m sure of: these guys selling the Plus One votes are making a crap-load of money.

Here’s a screenshot from Fiverr.com ( a great site to find cheap freelancers) searching for Google Plus One…..note at the top there are 208 best matches:

So, what do you think about Google Plus One? Have you noticed your rankings improve? Did you buy Google Plus One’s? Have checked out any of the Google Plus One’s for sale sites? Let our readers know whether they worked for you.

Clearly, this Webchicklet has way too much time on my hands on this Saturday morning. I got to wandering the web and came across an old 2008 post about how Google was not a relevant search engine according to it’s own search engine! Back in 2008, Garry Conn wrote about typing the search term “search engine” into google.com. The results back then were astounding, as Google wasn’t even listed in the first few pages of search results! Back then, Google search considered Altavista.com, dogpile.com and ask.com the three most relevant search engines. So I got to thinking…..Google must have rectified this little oversight by now, right?

So, naturally, I opened up the google.com main search page and typed in the term “search engine” to see if they now think they are a relevant search engine. The results made me laugh yet again.

As you can see, strangely, not much has changed. The top three most relevant search engines now are Dogpile, AltaVista, and Bing is now in third place. Google.com is nowhere to be found on the first page. In fact, according to the Google Search Engine, the Google Search Engine is the 20th most relevant search engine! That’s right, google.com is at the bottom of page 2! The results are rather strange, given that DogPile.com is probably one of the worst search engines out there. And Yahoo, supposedly the number two search engine, on number of visitors is listed in 9th place.

If you enter the same search on Yahoo.com, you’ll see Yahoo Search listed number one, google number two, and again, DogPile is in the top three. When you search on Bing.com, you get Dogpile number one again, then wikipedia, and then altavista(is Altavista really still around??) . And interestingly, the ever popular DuckDuckGo.com is the 4th most relevant search engine according to Bing.

I’ve got nothing more to add to this. This is just one of those head scratcher’s that have no right or wrong answers. But clearly, we should all start buying up DogPile stock, as it will be the next Google!

Are you looking for a SEO service? Did you know there are good and bad ways of doing SEO work? Many people are claiming that they can get you top rankings within X amount of time, and if they don’t you will get your money back. This sounds like a good deal to most average non-technical people, but the truth is that these are not such a good deal after all – at least the majority of them. SEO is something that cannot be guaranteed and if someone or a company say this it is likely either they are new in the SEO game, and know nothing about it, or they are using methods that could very likely get your site banned after a few months. So the next time you hear a deal like this, ask them for some examples of past clients. You will find most cannot show you any proof of work.

Having said all that, there are good SEO guys out there who may charge slightly more, but they will use long lasting methods to get your site onto the first page. Yes, it will cost more and possibly take longer as well, but the wait is usually well worth it because you will get the benefits from it many years after. If you already using a website design service at the moment you can simply ask them about SEO. Chances are they will be able to do it for slightly cheaper rates as you are already buying a website from them. But again, don’t let cost and convenience be the reason you choose a company to do your SEO work. Even if the guy is your friend or family member you should still look at it from the business point of view and take it more seriously. Otherwise you may be just wasting your time and their time.

The good SEO guys will tell you exactly what they will do for your website; they should never hide things from you and always give you up to date reports of the tasks they have done in that week or month. This will help you decide whether their methods are working for you and more importantly whether it’s profitable for the business.

If you are a web designer but don’t know anything about SEO you will find this article useful. The web design industry is getting more competitive when more non-designers are claiming that they are doing web design for businesses. You, as a web designer will need to learn and provide more in order to survive in this competitive industry. SEO is one of those things that a web designer should know but most still don’t. If you are one of these people you need get some books, read forum posts, maybe go a seminar or two to gain some understanding of this area.

So if you offer freelance web design services currently, then you will be able to add SEO services to make you more valuable to clients. But before you start offering your services with SEO you should get your own site ranking well first. That way you can show the client that you can actually do the work. I will give you some tips to get you started quickly. These are the foundation of SEO and most websites will required these to succeed in the SEO game.

The first one is submitting your website to web and article directories. This step will help in getting your website indexed as well as setting up a good foundation of back links. It’s almost like the old saying of “start low and build it up as time goes by”. Bear in mind this step can be very boring and time consuming if you do it all by hand, manually I mean. If you are smart you already know the answer, that is to use an automatic directory submission tool. There are so many floating around the internet so you need to do some research and read some reviews before deciding on which one to purchase.

After you have submitted to some web and article directories you need to move on to the blogging step. Again, this is very simple to do, but time consuming. You can either start a blog with an online service like Blogspot, or you can download WordPress and install it on your own server. The latter is the recommended method because you will have total control over your files and posts. Also, you can do more things to it, such as adding plugins and changing the themes. Blogging is a long term investment, you need to write often and promote it at the same time, but the effort will pay off once the traffic start to flow in from the search engines.

Last week this Webchicklet stumbled upon Google’s newly released Keyword Tool beta version. I’m sure most web publishers and marketers would agree, keyword research is one of the most important aspects of publishing content. If you want traffic to your blog you gotta know what people are searching for. And with this new and much improved tool, you’ll have no trouble finding things to write about that will drive readers to your blog.

Google’s keyword tool has always been an important and useful tool in my toolbox. And their latest version is absolutely fantastic! As usual, you can find keyword ideas by entering a word or phrase, or by entering a website url. This will give you a large list of keyword ideas, as it always has. But my favorite new feature: you can now browse by categories, for example financial, beauty, consumer electronics, etc. I could (and quite often do) spend many hours browsing through each category finding interesting keywords that have a high search volume. Here’s what the new Google Keyword Tool looks like:

The new keyword research tool also gives more advanced options to break down the available data such as country specific data, mobile data, setting your own CPC prices, adding your own keyword filters, and filtering by match type such as exact or phrase. I’ve barely scratched the surface of this excellent tool and will continue to dig right in to it, and I recommend you do the same! And best of all, unlike the MANY expensive keyword research tools out there, Googles tool is still FREE!
