Free Online File Converters

You have a document emailed to you. Your computer doesn’t like the format. Or you have a graphic and you want to send it to your friend, mom, uncle, or boss. His or her computer can’t read that type of file. Or you have a video you want to upload to some new, cool video sharing site, but it doesn’t accept the format your video is in. We’ve all had problems like this before, and it can be a pain in the rear to convert these files to something else – especially in the case of video or audio! These days, those problems are virtually eliminated because of the Internet. There are free services that will convert almost any kind of file format to almost any other kind of file format, including documents, images, audio and video. Here are the two online file conversion services that I use most often.

Zamzar

This site is the one that I find to be most reliable. I’ve not had an issue with it ever being down when I needed it. It has both free and paid plans, and so far, I’ve been able to convert everything I needed under the restrictions of the free plans. They convert pretty much EVERYTHING so I doubt many people will have some sort of file type that can’t be converted.

Youconvertit

This site seems to be down fairly often for me. But when it’s working, it works well. Like Zamzar, it converts pretty much everything including the kitchen sink, but is completely free. That may be what contributes to its down times.

I’ve used Youconvertit a little more often than Zamzar only because it crossed my radar first, but Zamzar has been my top choice for a while, mainly because of the reliability. The key takeaway here is that you don’t have to download any kind of software to convert one file type to another anymore. Online services can handle it all with ease these days, so if you need to convert almost anything to almost anything else – you can.

I had planned to list all the different formats that each could convert from and to, but frankly there are just too many to list. So instead, I’ll just link out to the pages that show that information. Zamzar converts all these types of files. Youconvertit doesn’t have a direct link that I can use to show you its file conversion types because it uses some sort of popup script, but just go to the home page and click on Supported Formats at the bottom of the home page.

Have fun with your file conversions!

I started usin this one at http://www.mediaconverter.org which I think is awesome.
I mostly use it to convert moviefiles to mp3, so I kan listen to them in the car or Ipod, but I have slo tried the other formats, and they work great too.

I have never had problems withthis one at all.
