StumbleUpon Adds Thumbs Down Reason Choices And Blocking

In a move that has long been needed, StumbleUpon has finally implemented the ability to choose a reason for thumbing a site down. The reasons available in the dropdown box next to the Thumbs Down icon in the toolbar are:

  1. Not-for me (which means, “This doesn’t suit me”).
  2. Stumbled this before (which means, “This content was in a previous stumble”).
  3. Too much like this lately (which means, “Baby animals are nice, but that’s enough for now”).

In addition, they’ve added a Block Website option under those three options. They explain this to mean:

Adds website blocking via the thumbdown menu for FF 3.x users. Blocked websites won’t be served via the Stumble button.

That’s not clear to me. Does that block it only from my stumbles? Does it affect the stumbling of other users? I’m not yet sure, but if I hear anything, I’ll let you know. You do the same for me.

In any case, I’m happy to see these improvements roll out.

If you are the first to "discover" any of my posts in StumbleUpon, one of the following categories would probably be the most appropriate to place it into. You don't have to choose one of these, of course, but based on what I usually write about, there's a good chance any of my posts will fall into one of these categories.

Computers * Computer Graphics * Computer Hardware * Computer Security * Databases * Internet * Internet Tools * Linux/Unix * Web development * Weblogs(Blogs) * Windows

Now if we could only get a “Thumbs Up” reason.

  2. I can’t tell you how many times I have thumbed something up and still stumble it. When I thumb up it is added to favorites, so I don’t need to stumble it again.

    Let’s get some stumblers here…

I think this is an excellent idea. Often I get multiple stumbles of the same page cause some of my friends are friends of others and it gets sent back and forth. I look forward to when this will come into effect.

No “Video that scared the shit out of me by playing automatically at three in the fucking morning?” option? I think there’s still a wasy to go on this one…

wish they could put a “two thumbs up” or LOVE IT button, because there’s those few sites that are just wonderful, beyond the scope of regular thumbs up sites.

You know it amazes me how excited people get when eBay finally gets around to editing this piece of junk. God I wish they’d hurry up and sell it to someone worthy.

The beta looks worse than myspace and its equally byzantine.

    And that’s just for starters.

I give your site a thumbs up and The changes are overdue. Too bad you can’t git rid of the winey comments. Its like if you don’t like the service, don’t use it.

Stumbled across this, giving a thumbs up. I love the new additions also. Would be cool to have a drop down for thumbs up too.

How about “this is crap” button? or “this is almost spam” thumbs down? Or how about a “content was fine, but the overall site is crap” -button??

@Richard, some people are just born to be whiners or born grumpy. I stumble (no pun intended) across those types daily. That’s ok. I keep smiling. :D

yep, but when I thumbs down and say not for me, I get 12 more just like it… doesn’t seem to work very well.

  15. I am stuck on this page and no matter how I rate it up or down, it will not go the next Stumble…….

    So now what??????

thmatrix777, have you clicked on the SU button on the toolbar? if so, and still not working, maybe just restarting the browser will “unstick” it.

  17. Thanks. I did try that. I even reloaded Stumble cause I really love it but it started again on the first page I Stumbled. It got stuck again. I can’t imagine what in the world is going on……

I’m taking any and all suggestions. It’s my favorist thing to do. I’m an invalid, housebound and I don’t have much fun…..cause I don’t have to type much.

  18. As someone on the SU review page of this splog post so eloquently put it:

“we need another reason for thumbing a page down: “Welcome, StumbleUpon visitor! Don’t forget to give me a thumbs up if you like this page !”"

  19. I’d like to have a “content above fold entirely ads” option added to the list. Some ads are fine (I used them myself), but push them to the side so we can see the content first.

  20. TheGabe Says:

    This is not enough.
We need more options- thumbs up or thumbs down is just too basic.
But I like the block site option. That is good.
Maybe it’ll stop serving me youtube videos now.

  21. I guess it is better than nothing. Squidoo and Youtube have the option for a 1-5 rating which is better.
